Chapter 3.
The Education System.
By Billy Zheng.
"Education. A form of self-delusion." -Elbert Hubbard (1856-1915) American author, editor and printer.
In the recent years, I have been exposed to many kinds of things in school. English, Math, Science..The arts. I was allright with education until one day i just asked myself. what are we studying for. The education system is a thing of the government. What do they want us to be? They want us to be top minds. good men and women. Yet what do they put us through? Six years of primary education, Four years of secondary, and a choice between JC and Polytechnic. after which, we go university, and work until we die. But who are we doing this for? Do WE want to study?
How come in education, The school, or government, don't allow us to study what we want? Some people may be good in english but hate math. Some people may hate sciences but are good in lit. Yet people put us through this. We get well in the subjects we like and fail those we can't do. And those failures? they make our parents nag for more. In the end, who are we studying for? Are we studying for our own selves? are we studying for the Government? Who? Why can't the education system be more flexible? For example. We, as secondary school students are mature enough to make our own descisions. In other countries, people are given a choice of what to study. In Amherst College, Massechusetts, Boston, U.S.A, Students are allowed to choose whatever they want to study. My brother studies Jazz and philosophy, what he wants. In singapore, Everyone studies Maths, English, Science, Lit, Chinese, Amaths, Maths, Geography, Home econs, art, and history. What are they trying to do, overload us? In the time to come you will realise that in the end it's not your education, or how much algebra you know. It's what you are and what job you get. If you get a job you like, that's good. it's your choice. HOW ABOUT UNHAPPY JOBS? people can choose jobs which are not what they want but pay alot, and need things like algebra or whatever? What counts MORE? It's you.
'The mutual disdain between JC and Poly kids is quite frightening. Poly kids will go "wah lao, these JC students think they know everything", and JC kids will always say "I'm such a failure, I'm gonna join Poly".'- Gayle Goh, i-speak
Just kinda stumbled into this blog while searching for another student blog, The Student Sketchpad. el
itism has always been an issue close to my heart, as I am a product of this education system, which in its emphasis on meritocracy, has streamed students in a very rigid manner in order to have a pool of talents from which our future leaders can be handpicked and groomed. In the process of breeding new leaders for the PAP, the rest of the people are just plan subjected to intense education training meant for government standard intelectuals. Like those people in "affl-Nevermind.", They push their students so hard, the pressure so much, until they start to lose their personality! Their own emotions and common sense are ERODED and REPLACED with calculus, amaths, French, Japanese, and a whole long list of subjects that run from here to kingdom come. And you know what? People are DYING because of this education system. oh yeah, you might not know, but soon i tell you, Schools will be places where they press students out like so many gingerbreadmen, fill them up with knowledge and textbooks which set them off and wind them up to go and DIE.
But on the other hand. I am too lazy to post. So i shall end it here and continue chapter 3 another time. here's some candy to enjoy while you wait.
